Kyiv: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky put NATO on Friday because it ruled out a zone without flies in his country who said the Western military alliance knew further Russian aggression.
“Knowing that new strikes and victims were inevitable, NATO deliberately decided not to close the sky over Ukraine,” he said in a video published by the presidency.
“Today the leadership of the Alliance gave a green light for further bombing from the cities and villages of Ukraine, refusing to make zones without flies.”
Earlier on Friday, NATO rejected the request from Ukraine to force a zone without a flies to stop the Russian bombing, but the West Allied did warn President Vladimir Putin from new sanctions if he did not stop the war.
Head of NATO Jens Stoltenberg said the alliance would not intervene in conflict for fear of direct clashes with Moscow which could spin into a wider conflict.
“The only way to implement zones without flies is to send NATO fighter planes to Ukrainian airspace, and then impose the zone without the fly by firing Russian aircraft,” Stoltenberg said after an urgent meeting.
“If we do that, we will end up with something that can end in full war in Europe, involving more countries and causing more human suffering.”
