The sequel to Bright was announced after the release of the first film released in 2017. Now coming in 5 years later, now the sequel has been removed since the incident of the Smith Smith gate. This film has many updates for years so this is all we know so far brightly 2.
Released on December 22, 2017, Bright is a new Fantasy Thriller film starring Joel Edgerton and Will Smith. The film is set in an alternative Los Angeles where humans live with Orcs and other mythical creatures.
At the time of the release, Netflix noted that it was one of the releases of the biggest film ever. The film was mainly released before Netflix reported 2 minutes statistics or hourly statistics, therefore, we did not know how well a bright stack over the years later. It was then reported that 60 million Netflix users watched the film even though it was not clear about what time period this ended.
On January 3, 2018 Netflix confirmed the sequel to be tentatively again named Bright 2 (the confirmation teaser below also suggested joking names such as brighter and more poor in Mordor, Orcs Wild and Wild Wars).
So with all the time passed since the announcement, where we were with a sequel that was expected to see the return of Will Smith and Joel Edgerton in their respective roles. It was also reported that films would likely go to international in sequels.
Development time line on 2 bright so far
As we stated above, we came in half a decade since the first film was released. The sequel was confirmed more than four years ago in early January. Following the announcement, under the job find find noted that “casting has been going on” on January 8, 2018.
David Ayer was announced to remind the script (although Evan Spiliotopoulos was then purchased into rewriting) with Eric Newman and Bryan did not specting back (this pair worked with Netflix based on the overall agreement).
Variety Insight reports that Grand Electric, Clubhouse Pictures, and Crave Films will all return to produce films.
2019 is a big year for filming films that reportedly plan to start in the summer (specifically July) that year. It never produced results, but with the Will Smith scheduling conflict seemed to cause detention.
Of course, in 2020, very few who came down from the ground because Covid-19 prevents production begin to walk which seems to cause rethinking around the script. It was confirmed on May 2020 when the deadline revealed that David Ayer no longer directed films and Louis Lemerrier was contested for the role of the Board of Directors.
Fast forward to 2021, we heard about Bright 2 in an interview covering all with the head of the film Netflix, Scott Stuber. Interview, published at the end of July 2021, mentioned brightly 2 but not in great detail said:
“It [Netflix] is close to having the last script for” Bright 2, “who will bring back the original stars Will Smith and Joel Edgerton,”
Also in July 2021, production has stated that filming (or production at least) is due to the fall of 2021. We do not have confirmation about it. Another addition to the production list is that T.S. Nowlin, who was involved in the Adam Netflix project, was in the writing team. Nowlin is also known for his involvement with the Laze Runner film franchise.
In the fall of 2021, Netflix released an anime spin-off Bright: Samurai Soul which was released in October 2021 with a little without doomsday. This film fails to reach Netflix Top 10 in any area and only has 5.5 on IMDB.
Now let’s come to the current year, 2022.
Many worried that this project had been stopped or put behind the burner after many Project Will Smith was canceled or stopped. They were stopped because of Smith’s actions in Oscar where he slapped Chris Rock who told jokes at the expense of his wife. Following Oscar, Indiewire reported that Smith was still joining to repeat his role in his sequel.
However, in April 2022, all hopes were lost on the project. Bloomberg reported that the National Geographic Series Pole to Pole owned by Will Smith was delayed but did not mention Bright 2. Lucas Shaw, another media writer in Bloomberg, stated on Twitter that the project had been canceled with silent -diam said:
“Netflix has also left a plan to make a bright sequel, but it was not related to the incident.”
Netflix also stopped the development of other Smith projects in the form of Fast and Loose’s upcoming film. Hollywood reporter first delivered the news about it. The council remains one of the Project Will Smith now on Netflix.
Is it the end of the Bright story on Netflix? For now, it looks like the answer is yes.
