San Francisco: Six people were shot and killed on Sunday in California, with 12 more injured in the latest mass victims to trigger calls in the United States for new actions to combat weapons violence.
The shooting took place Sunday morning at California Capital City of Sacramento around 2:00 after “big fight” broke out in the downtown area, police chief Kathy Lester said at a press conference.
The nearby patrol officer heard gunshots and saw people running, he said.
After arriving at the scene, “they encountered a large crowd and several shots of gunfire.”
Despite resuscitation efforts, six victims were said to die in the scene – three men and three women, all adults, Lester said.
Twelve other people were shot and treated at a local hospital.
At a press conference on Sunday morning, Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg described some of those who were hospitalized as “severe and critical injured.”
He also asks anyone with information to contact the authority or send evidence through a scanned QR code.
Lester said Sunday night there was a “few shooter” and “stolen pistol” recovered at the scene.
He added that investigators had received several videos and tips from public members, but immediately search for more information.
A video posted online Sunday seems to show people curry on the road, then start running when a shot can be heard.
AFP cannot verify recordings, and it is not known whether there is a direct relationship, but the local police said they were aware of the video.
“It was just terrible,” said the Activist of the Berry Accius community, who arrived a few minutes after the shooting.
“As soon as I walk, you see a chaotic scene, the police in all places, the victims with blood throughout their bodies, people shout, people cry, people go, ‘Where are my brothers?’ Mother cries and tries to identify who their child is, “he told KXTV local broadcasters.
The shooting took place in the city center, only a block from Capitol Country and close to the venue where Sacramento Kings NBA played.
‘We must act’
“America once again grieved because other communities were destroyed by weapons violence,” said US President Joe Biden in a statement on Sunday night.
“We must do more than mourning; we must act,” said Biden, who reaffirmed his call to Congress to exceed the law to strengthen weapons restrictions.
Mayor Steinberg said it was difficult to find the right words to describe the tragedy.
“The number of dead and injured is difficult to understand,” he said, adding that he was waiting for more information about the incident.
“Rising Gun violence is the specter of the city, state, and our nation, and I support all actions to reduce it,” he said.
Casual bulk shooting is the latest in the United States, where firearms are involved in around 40,000 deaths per year, including suicide, according to the violent gun archive website.
California Governor Gavin Newsom described weapons violence as a “crisis” for the United States.
“We cannot continue to allow weapons violence to be normal,” he said in a post on Twitter.
LAX pistol law and constitutional guaranteed rights to bake have repeatedly accelerated efforts to clamp the number of circulating weapons, although greater control is favored by the majority of Americans.
Three-quarters of all the killings in the US are committed to weapons, and the number of pistols, revolves, and other firearms sold continue to increase.
More than 23 million weapons were sold in 2020 – notes – above 20 million in 2021, according to data compiled by small weapons analytics websites.
The number does not include “ghost” weapons, which are sold dismantled, do not have serial numbers, and are highly valued in criminal circles.
In June 2021, 30 percent of American adults said they had at least one pistol, according to the Pew survey.
